As an educator, Jim has been a high-school teacher, coach, principal, district superintendent and headmaster. He serves on the boards of trustees for York School (Monterey, California) and Monterey Peninsula College.

his second career is in sports. During 31 years as an NFL official, Jim worked a record 29 postseason games, including ten Championships, three Super Bowls, and six Pro Bowls. Name Sporting News Best NFL Official and awarded The Gold Whistle by the National Association of Sports Officials, Jim was the first official named to the "All-Madden Team" and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Jim's third career is as a professional speaker. A past-president of the National Speakers Association, he is a charter member of its most prestigious group — the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame — and holds every professional designation of the NSA, including the "Oscar of Professional Speaking" — The Cavett.

He established the Jim Tunney Youth Foundation in 1993 to support local community programs that develop leadership and work skills, wellness and self-esteem in youth.
